Oll Korrect

Three dictionaries of record carried the wrong origin of OK until 1961. The discipline that eventually settled it had, since 1878, required every exception to be named.

The mechanism

The false friend
A genuinely probabilistic regularity, where exceptions are expected and quantified in advance. The distinction is whether the exception rate was predicted or discovered.
The discriminating test
Run the explanation across every case meeting its antecedent, not the cases it was built from. Then account for each failure by a named mechanism. An unexplained residue is a defect in the account, not a property of the world.

Take an accepted market explanation, enumerate every historical instance of its antecedent, and compute the hit rate. Then require a named mechanism for each miss.

Three American dictionaries of record — Webster’s, New Century, and Funk & Wagnalls — carried a Choctaw derivation for OK until 1961.

It was not a silly theory. Missionaries had documented the Choctaw particle okeh, “it is so,” in an 1825 Bible translation. The sound matched, the meaning matched, and there was a documented contact route. Competing theories offered Scots och aye and Greek óla kalá.

Allen Walker Read published the answer in American Speech in 1963 and 1964. Boston in 1838 had a fad for comically misspelled abbreviations — OFM for “our first men,” NG for “no go,” OW for “oll wright.” OK abbreviated oll korrect, a deliberate misspelling of “all correct,” and it appears in print in the Boston Morning Post on 23 March 1839.

“Old Kinderhook,” the story that OK stood for Van Buren’s hometown, is a backronym. It was attached during the 1840 campaign, a year after the term was already circulating with its Boston-joke meaning. The story is true as far as it goes. It is simply not the origin, and it arrived after the thing it purports to explain.

For over a century, the dictionaries of record were wrong, and the false answers were the ones with better stories.

Why the wrong answers win #

Folk etymology is not stupidity. It is what an explanation looks like when nothing constrains it.

A derivation invented after the fact has one job — account for this word — and it is being judged on whether it accounts for this word. Choctaw okeh does. So does och aye. So does Old Kinderhook, which has the additional advantage of a president in it.

The real answer looked worse by the standards being applied. A joke about deliberate misspelling in a Boston newspaper is arbitrary, undignified, and has no satisfying logic. It only wins once you demand something beyond fitting the case.

The demand #

Historical linguistics made that demand in 1878, and it is the most useful thing in the field.

Brugmann, Osthoff and the Leipzig group — the Neogrammarians — published the doctrine that a sound change applies to every word meeting its phonetic environment at the time it operates, with no lexical exception. Sound laws admit no exceptions.

This is not a truism dressed up. It is a falsifiable claim about how language changes, and it was contested when it was made. What matters is what it does to the practice.

Suppose a proposed correspondence holds for ninety-eight items in a comparison set and fails for two. Under a loose-tendency view, that is a strong result — 98% is excellent, the two are noise. Under the regularity hypothesis, that is not a result at all until the two are accounted for. They must be loanwords, or analogical reformations, or subject to some further conditioning environment that has not yet been identified.

What they are not permitted to be is irregular.

This is what converts a sound law from an observation into an instrument. A rule that tolerates unexplained exceptions cannot be used to test a reconstruction, because any reconstruction can be saved by classifying its failures as exceptions. A rule that forbids them can, because every failure is now a debt.

Later challenges — lexical diffusion, principally — argue about how strictly regularity holds. They do not argue that it was the wrong thing to demand.

The version nobody demands #

Financial explanations are almost never run against the full set.

An account of why something happened is assembled from the cases that motivated it, checked against a few more, and then circulated. Rate moves cause the sector to do this. Inventory builds precede that. This kind of insider pattern indicates the other thing. Each is supported by instances, and in most cases nobody has enumerated the antecedent.

The regularity demand is a single question: how many times has the condition occurred, and what happened every time?

Not a selection of illustrative cases. Every instance of the antecedent, including the ones nobody wrote a note about, including the boring ones, including the ones where nothing followed.

Then the second half, which is the part that does the work. For every case where the rule failed, name the mechanism. Not “market conditions were different” — a named, specific, checkable reason of the kind that could be recognised in advance next time. A loanword is a real category with independent evidence. “Special situation” is not.

An account with a residue of unexplained failures is not a rule with some noise around it. It is an account that has not been finished, and the size of the residue is the measure of how much is left to do.

The rate is the finding #

The dictionaries did not carry the Choctaw theory because lexicographers were careless. They carried it because it fit, and because until Read went looking, nobody had produced the material that fit better.

What eventually settled it was not a cleverer story. It was a citation with a date on it, and a discipline that had spent eighty years insisting that fitting the case is not enough.

Most market explanations have never had their exception rate computed, which means the number is unknown rather than good.

The two states get reported identically.
